1. We learn from the interview with Suzanne Collins that the term "Panem" comes from the Latin term "panem et circenses" meaning "bread and circuses" (or bread and games). The definition of this term from m-w.com is: provision of the means of life and recreation by government to appease discontent.
With this definition in mind, why would Collins name the country "Panem"? Do you think this name is appropriate?
2. Katniss is able to succeed in training and in The Games partially because of her skill with a bow and arrow. Young Rue is a very good hider. If you were in the games what would your skill be? Would you try for any special weapons or rely on something else? Katniss is lucky because these games take place in the woods, a setting she is familiar with. What setting or terrain would you feel most comfortable being dropped into? Explain your reasoning.
3. The Hunger Games is obviously a very violent and disturbing program. Why do you think people (from various districts) continue to watch it on TV every year?
4. Explain the origin and symbol of the mockingkay.
